JUDGING YEARBOOKS
Preliminary judging for State Yearbooks takes place in the District competition. Ribbons are given to the best entries in the Yearbook Award categories listed above. District ribbon winners are announced at the district meetings. District winners are not automatically State winners.
DISTRICT COMPETITION
1. All yearbooks submitted for awards should be entered in District competition.
2. Two copies of the Yearbook, accompanied by two copies of the properly completed “Application for State Award” forms are submitted to the District Awards Chairman.
3. District Competition Deadline: Set by the District or two weeks prior to the District Meeting. District Directors shall inform club presidents of the deadline and the name and address of the District Chairman.
STATE COMPETITION
- Blue Ribbon winners in District competition are submitted by the District Yearbook Chairman or the District
Director to the State Yearbook Chairman for judging at the state level.
- Yearbooks not submitted to the District, or not District winners, may be submitted to the State.
- State Competition Deadline: November 1
- Yearbooks will be returned at the Annual State Meeting or after the NGC Convention.
POINT SYSTEM FOR JUDGING/COMPILING YEARBOOKS
FORMAT 15 pts
A. Book Structure – Practical, convenient size, durable, neat 3 pts
B. Arrangement of contents
- Cover: name of club, town, state, year (design optional) 2 pts
If permanent binder cover used, substitute with paper cover and
include required information on cover and so note. - Title Page: name of club, town, state, year, number of members, 2 pts
affiliated organizations (district, GCNC, SAR, NGC, other) - Subsequent pages (in any order most useful to members) 8 pts
Club officers; club membership roster with complete mailing
addresses and telephone numbers; names and addresses of NGC
President, SAR Director, State President, State District
Director, Council President (if any); Calendar of events. - Options: club’s choice to include bylaws, budget, fund raising, 0 pts
roll call, NGC/Region/State themes; club theme, if used, should be evident throughout the book.
PROGRAMS (Indicate if special interest club, i.e., Horticulture only, Design only, etc.) 50 pts
Study on variety of NGC Goals and Objectives such as: Birds, Blue Star Memorials, Butterflies, Civic Achievement, Conservation, Environment, Flower Shows, Floral Design, Historic Preservation, Horticulture, Horticulture Therapy, Landscape Design, Legislation, Litter Control, Roadside Beautification, US & World Gardens, Wildflowers, World Gardening, Youth, etc.
- At least seven meetings a year 3 pts
- Date, location/address, time of meeting 3 pts
- Speaker’s name, qualifications (brief), program title 4 pts
- Programs, workshops, tours furthering NGC Goals 40 pts
& Objectives, give brief word description (lecture, slides,
demonstration, hands-on workshop)
a. Variety of program topics (theme not required) 12 pts
b. Variety of program styles (lectures, slides, tours, etc.) 12 pts
c. Variety of speakers (specialists, members, panel, etc.) 12 pts
d. Portion or full program explaining NGC President’s project,
“Protecting Aquatic Ecosystems”, see gardenclub.org 2 pts
e. Portion or full program on NGC Member Services items
Online catalog of NGC items for sale (jewelry, books, etc.);

PROJECTS (Judged on scope as outlined in description of projects) 35 pts
Projects involve actual membership participation that benefits the
community and furthers NGC Goals and Objectives (does not include
fund -raising or social activities)
- List Continuing and New Participating Projects 15 pts
- Give brief word description of projects: location, how others 20 pts
benefit, how members are expected to participate, chairman, etc.
List Donations: amount, in-kind donations, to whom, sale of
GCNC/NGC products (Vision of Beauty Calendars, GCNC cookbook)
