ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS

1. THE MASLIN AWARD
Given in memory of the first President of The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., Miss Edna Maslin, may be awarded to a qualified, living member of The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., who has contributed the most over a period of years to further its aims and projects. Emphasis will be based on outstanding, active participation on the state level.
Applications shall include garden club related activities only. Entries, signed by nominee’s current club president, must come from nominee’s club, council, or district. It must be typed, single spaced and not exceed 500 words. All requirements must be met.
Applications must be sent to the State Awards Chairman by February 25. The Awards Chairman shall mail completed, unabridged copies of all qualified entries to each member of the Executive Committee by March 15. Ballots shall be returned by mail to the Awards Chairman by March 25. The Awards Chairman will not vote except in the event of a tie. Decision shall be by majority vote. NO BALLOTS WILL BE ACCEPTED AFTER MARCH 25.
The Awards Chairman shall open and tally all ballots. Immediately, The State Awards Chairman will immediately report decision only to the State President, who will approve selection and purchase of recipient’s award. Names of nominees, including the winner, must be kept secret. Book of Evidence Required.
2. MEMBER AWARD OF HONOR – A GCNC, SAR, and NGC Award
Honors one garden club member in each District and one GCNC recipient chosen from the District winners whose volunteer efforts, during a period of five years or more, have made outstanding contributions to club and community in one or more of the following areas: Civic Development, Horticulture Therapy, Youth Activities, Conservation, Horticulture, Design, Landscape Design, and/or All Around Excellence.
Eligibility: Any member of a State Garden Club who has never served as a member of the National Garden Club
Board of Directors, including as State President.
Deadline Date: Each District Director shall send their District winner’s Book of Evidence to the State Awards Chairman by January 2.
After being judged by a State Awards Committee, the State Awards Chairman shall forward the State winner’s Book of Evidence to the Regional Awards Chairman by February 1.
Rules: Book of Evidence to be submitted to the District Director. The District Director judges the applicants and sends the winning Book of Evidence to the State Awards Chairman. Book of Evidence is not to exceed 6 pages (total), must be typed and secured in a green folder. No loose pages. Include the following:
1. A short, typed description of the nominee’s accomplishments.
2. Title Page includes: the name of the State Federation (GCNC) and the Region (SAR).
3. The area/s (listed above) of nominee’s outstanding contributions.
4. Name, complete mailing address and phone number of nominee, sponsoring club, including club president’s name, address and signature.
Supporting Information to include:
Maximum 2 page outline listing accomplishments of nominee (including offices and chairmanships held), a
photograph of nominee (name of nominee/complete mailing address must be on back of picture). Please secure
photo by stapling so it does not get lost.
NOTIFICATIONS:
State Winners: Each state winner will receive a certificate from their State Awards Chairman.
Regional Winners: State Awards Chairman will forward the state winner and Book of Evidence to the Regional Awards Chairman by February 1 to be judged by a panel on the Regional Level.
REGIONAL WINNERS AUTOMATICALLY BECOME THE NATIONAL WINNER FROM THAT REGION.
The Regional Chairman will notify the winner and send the winning Book of Evidence to the National Member Award of Honor Chairman.
Awards Presentation:
Regional/National Winners will be presented with a certificate and pin at the National Convention and will be listed in the Awards Booklet and The National Gardener. The Books of Evidence will be returned at this time.
3. AWARD OF EXCELLENCE
Donor: Starmount Garden Club
$25.00 awarded to the club with the highest score on their ANNUAL CLUB REPORTS. The District Director will submit name of club and total points of highest score to the State Awards Chairman to determine winner.
4. CLUB OF THE YEAR AWARDS
Donor: The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc.
Awarded to clubs that best meet the objectives of the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc., as listed in Article II, items 3, 4 and 5 of the Bylaws. The Book of Evidence should be a complete report of club’s activities with supportive evidence such as pictures, plans, letters, cancelled checks, receipts, newspaper coverage, etc. General rules for state awards apply. Book of Evidence Required.
- Club with membership of 18 or less: First Place: $300.00, Second Place: $150.00, Third Place: $50.00
- Club with membership of 19 through 40: First Place: $300.00, Second Place: $150.00, Third Place: $50.00
- Club with membership of 41 or more: First Place: $300.00, Second Place: $150.00, Third Place: $50.00
5. SCROLL: DISTRICT WITH THE LARGEST NUMBER OF AWARD APPLICATIONS
Awarded to the District with the largest percentage of GCNC, SAR, and NGC award applications based on the size of the district. Winner determined from the reports of the State Awards Chairman.
6. SCROLL: SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT
Awarded for outstanding work by a garden club member, club or council that best meets the objectives of The Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. Written report not to exceed 2 pages typed required.
7. AWARD OF EXCELLENCE “THE CHARLES ‘ERIC’ MCLENDON AWARD”
Donor: Linda McLendon, in memory of Eric McLendon, son of Charles and Linda, for his love of beauty and flowers $100.00 awarded a single club, group of clubs or a council for an outstanding “Wildflower of the Year” landscape project promoting educational interest in that wildflower. The “Wildflower of the Year” is designated by NC Botanical Gardens, Chapel Hill and the Garden Club of North Carolina, Inc. This is for a one year project. Book of Evidence is required.

$100.00 given in memory of Pat Olejar for the best holiday decoration of a public or historic building by a garden club or clubs. The decoration should use plant materials and include both the interior and exterior of the building. It may be any holiday season. Book of Evidence required.
15. MACGREGOR DOWNS GARDEN CLUB AWARD

$25.00 awarded for the best decoration of a garden club’s meeting place celebrating any holiday or special event. Book of Evidence required.
16. LINDA ELLEDGE WILLIS AWARD
Donor: Emerald Isle Garden Club
$25.00 awarded to a garden club or individual member for an outstanding entrance decoration (private home or public building). It may be any holiday season. Book of Evidence required.
17. PUBLIC SCHOOL BEAUTIFICATION

$25.00 awarded to a single club completing the most outstanding beautification project at a public school. The project may be of one year duration or a continuing project. Book of Evidence required.
18. ELLEN M. PAYNE DANIEL BOONE GARDEN AWARD
Donor: Vandy Bradow
$25.00 award donated to the Daniel Boone Gardens in honor of the club with the largest contribution to the Daniel Boone Gardens. All contributions must be channeled through State Headquarters and the winner will be determined by the State Treasurer’s records.
19. THE GERTRUDE THOMAS AWARD FOR CIVIC DEVELOPMENT

$25.00 awarded to any single club of 24 or less members completing the most outstanding civic beautification project in a city park or recreation area in one year. Book of Evidence required.
20. MARTHA FRANCK FRAGRANCE GARDEN AWARD

$25.00 donated to the Martha Franck Fragrance Garden in honor of the club with the largest contribution to the Martha Franck Fragrance Garden. All contributions must be channeled through State Headquarters and determined by the State Treasurer’s records.
21. FRIENDS OF ELIZABETHAN GARDENS

$25.00 awarded to the club reporting the highest percentage of members that join or renew membership in the
Elizabethan Gardens as verified by State Headquarters. To qualify, state the total number of members and list the members who have joined or renewed in the calendar year, January through December. Written report not to exceed one page, double spaced, required. Winner determined by the State Awards Chairman from verified report.
22. THE SYLVIA GATZY AWARD
Donor: Chapel Hill Garden Club
$25.00 awarded to a club member or a senior club reporting the most outstanding mentoring project. This may include, but is not limited to, mentoring youth garden groups, school groups, floral designers or those interested in horticulture. A written report, not to exceed one page required.
23. “Plant it Pink” Award

$ 50.00 awarded to the club that plants a new pink garden in any public placenthat best promotes awareness of the fight against breast cancer. Book of Evidence required.

$25.00 awarded to the club establishing the most outstanding blue bird trail. A minimum of six bird houses are required. Report should show the number of baby birds fledged from these houses, if possible. Book of Evidence including pictures required.
33. THE HUMMINGBIRD AWARD

$25.00 awarded to a club reporting the most outstanding project promoting observation of the hummingbird for the purpose of preserving/protecting the species. Give percent of members maintaining at least one hummingbird feeder for the season. Club programs/projects should educate members on habits and plants to lure them. Book of Evidence required.
34. CONSERVATION OF BUTTERFLIES AWARD

Club History Book of Evidence
A club history is the combination of a narrative account and a collection of pictures, newspaper clippings, etc.
A one year history shall cover the most recently completed club year. A five, ten or twenty-five year history shall cover the most recently completed years. Club histories must meet state specifications and follow the rules for GCNC awards. (Exception: No limitation to a specific number of pages.)
Contents:
1. On the cover, list the club name, town, district (Arabic numerals, 1, 2, etc.) and period covered.
2. On the Title page, list the club name, town, district, period covered, names and addresses of the president,
and person compiling the information. State number of members.
3. On subsequent pages, in order, list:
a. Purpose of club
b. Brief narrative of founding, including date, place, names of charter members (if available), officers
and other information of interest.
c. List names of presidents for period covered.
d. List programs, speakers, and any other pertinent information for each year covered.
e. List projects, giving descriptions, member participation and photographs, if available. Projects listed
should have benefited the community.
f. List awards or recognitions.
g. List members who are, or have been, officers and/or chairmen of GCNC, SAR, or NGC.
h. List GCNC, SAR, and NGC life members.
i. List members who are NGC Accredited Flower Show Judges or Landscape Design Consultants.
j. Give a summary of each year’s activities. All items should be listed in chronological order.
4. Send Book of Evidence, with completed Application for State Award, to the State Historian by December 1.

In addition to GCNC Award Application forms, the NGC Application Form with required information is attached to inside front cover; second form clipped to outside. REQUIREMENTS FOR PREPARING PUBLICITY PRESS BOOK:
- Label on outside cover: number and name of NGC award, category, name of club/s, city and state.
- Submit in green report cover or folder; 8 ½ x 11’ or 9 x 12”. No heavy scrapbooks or oversized portfolios. There is no limit on the number of pages. Plastic page protectors may be used.
- Material must consist of any of the following: Newspaper, magazine, newsletter, notices or flyers for one-time event, or any printed publication clippings (Example: Your state or regional official publication, The National Gardener, etc.), with the name and date of publication over each article. Clear photocopies are permitted; reduced photocopies of large or lengthy articles are permitted. Downloading of published newspaper articles from the Internet is permitted. Judges take into consideration the difficulty in securing newspaper publicity.
- No page numbering or Table of Contents needed. Affix contents in chronological order: January 1 through December 31.
- Clippings evenly cut. No loose clippings permitted.
- Each published item must contain the name of organization and/or individual/s identified as a member of the organization. Underline first use of name of organization and/or member in each article.
- Articles should include who, what, when, where, etc., where applicable; publicity should relate to organization’s or individual’s projects and/or activities; promotion of NGC objectives and goals.
