President's Message |
|
As we begin the 2007-2009 gardening term, let me outline some of this year’s themes and projects. The National Garden Club President, Barbara D. May, would like the focus in our communities to help us understand the importance of what we put into the earth and the consequences of these plantings. Her theme is: “Nurture the Earth – Plant Natives.” During the past few years severe weather patterns are making us more aware of how damaging fallen trees and shrubs not indigenous to an area can be on our communities. Also, the benefits of planting specimens that are native to an area include helping control invasive plants and local plant disease. One of the National President’s projects will be “Seeds of Tomorrow,” the development of a school gardens project coupled with a curriculum for teaching the benefits of native plants, wildflowers and organic gardening. Contact: Sarah Johns, 7033 Martin’s Point Rd, Kitty Hawk, NC 27946. South Atlantic Region Director, Anne Brown’s theme is “Sharing the Joy of Gardening” with the SAR Unified Project being “Caring, Sharing and Growing.” Contact: Linda McLendon, 115 Cedar Street, Dudley, NC 28333. I believe those who join garden club want to learn about gardening, flower arranging, how to landscape around their homes, conservation, the environment and much more. Coming events include a Flower Show Symposium, Flower School School, Landscape Design School and a Garden Study School. These next two years will be about Membership, Education and having fun! So come along with me for the next two years and “Let’s Have Fun” - Fun in gardening, Fun in learning, Fun in our meetings and Fun being together. Lila Petersen
